When Were Binoculars Invented?

You may have had a pair of toy binoculars to play with growing up. Or maybe you used your dad’s or grandad’s military binoculars. But have you ever wondered who invented them and when they were invented?

Binoculars are an instrument used for viewing far away objects. They are essentially two telescopes that are side by side used for viewing distant objects with both eyes. 

Binoculars History

The first known binoculars were invented by J.P. Lemiere in 1825. Though it was Ignatio Porro who created the more modern prism binoculars. Over the years many improvements have been made by various other inventors.

What are Binoculars Used For?

Nowadays binoculars are used a wide variety of different ways. They are used at tourist attractions, for birdwatching, hunting, and amateur astronomy. The have a long history of use in the military in addition to other fields like land surveying, though more modern technology is used these days.
