There are mushrooms that are nearly impossible to farm. Some of these mushrooms have a very high demand in the fine dining industry. The difficulty of farming these mushrooms along with the high demand means that these mushrooms come with a very high price tag. Here we will take a look at some of the most expensive mushrooms in the world.

White Truffle

White truffle can cost around $3000 a kilogram. One of the reasons it is so expensive is because it is only available a few months out of the year. It is also only found in two parts of Italy. Truffle hunting can be a very lucrative business. Usually, there are hunted by trained dogs.

Matsutake

There are several species of matsutake mushrooms, but the most expensive one is harvested from the roots of red pine trees. This mushroom has a price tag of about $459 per kilogram.

Morels

Morels are a hard to find mushroom that have sold for as high as $500 a kilogram. They grow in the United States but are only available a certain time of the year. They are known for being very hard to find because they are typically camouflaged by leaves and trees.

Chanterelle

Dried chanterelle mushrooms are sold for about $450 a kilogram. They grow in several colors, though the golden colored chanterelle is the most prized. These are expensive because they need very specific growing conditions. They are typically found in forests and in grass after a mix of heavy rainfall and humidity. They need to be completely cooked or they make people sick.

Black Truffle

Truffles are prized for their earthy taste and aromas. Much like the white truffle, these are hunted for by trained dogs and are only available at certain times of the year. They only grow when the conditions are perfect, which is why they are so hard to find, and very expensive.
