What Does Mead Taste Like?

You may have heard of mead being a popular drink of ancient Vikings. But did you know that you can actually still buy mead today? Many liquor stores around the world still sell mead. It’s not a very popular drink though, which is why you may have never tried it.

What Is Mead?

Mead is an alcoholic beverage that is made with fermented honey. Often there are also other fruits, grains, spices, and hops added to the mixture. Today you can find mead that is dry, sweet, or semi-sweet.

Taste of Mead

Since mead is made from honey, mead tastes a little bit like honey. The truth is there is a wide variety of kinds of mead, and each one can taste a little bit different. There can be a mead that is dry, sweet, or semi-sweet. The most common kind of mead you will find is likely a mead that has the dry taste of wine, with a slight hint of honey. So the best way to describe the taste would be “a lightly honey-flavored wine.” Although mead is not wine, that should help you visualize the flavor.

History of Mead

Mead is actually considered one of the oldest alcoholic drinks. Ancient fermented honey drinks have been referenced in China, India, Greece, and Egypt. Since it exists in so many cultures we can’t for sure say where it first originated. Evidence of Mead has been found in 7000 B.C. and has also been described in ancient European ceramics. The ancient Greeks even considered mead the drinks of the gods.

Conclusion

Mead is an alcoholic drink that is derived from honey. Mead has existed for thousands of years and there are many different variations. It’s hard to exactly describe the taste of mead, since there are so many variations. You are better of just trying it. As long as you are of age.
